Don’t skip Suva: things to do in Fiji’s capital
Suva, the sun-kissed tropical capital city of Fiji, is one of the most vibrant cities in the South Pacific. Home to an enchanting blend of indigenous culture and colonial influence, Suva is a paradise bursting with colour and life that shouldn’t be missed by those visiting. For changemakers working in the Pacific Islands, it is a popular destination for events and conferences, although many visitors are often quick to escape the city for it’s more relaxing island counterparts. Admittedly, I only explored Suva because I was there for a wedding. My other visits to Fiji have seen me explore the Coral Coast and Mana Island, but I’m glad I had the chance to immerse myself in a bit of Fijian culture, while still getting to explore the tropical environment. If you have a chance to visit Suva, here’s the things I recommend you do in this vibrant city!
Learn about Fijian Culture at the National Museum of Fiji
A visit to the National Museum of Fiji in Suva is like taking a journey through ancient and modern Fijian culture. The museum houses a wide range of fascinating artifacts from centuries past, from old tools and pottery to traditional jewelry and rare tapa cloths. Visitors also have the opportunity to explore the history of Fiji’s colonial powers as well as its complex, tribal structure. From authentic war canoes to intricately carved wooden masks, the National Museum offers an insight into the fascinating lives of Fijians throughout time. With its legendary cultural displays, coupled with interactive activities that make learning fun, this is an ideal destination for intrepid travelers who are passionate about immersing themselves in local history and traditions.
Just outside the museum, you’ll find the Thurston Botanic Gardens, one of the most celebrated botanical gardens in the entire Pacific region. It is a great location for tourists and locals alike, due to its abundant walking trails and gorgeous sightseeing opportunities. Throughout the gardens, visitors will find an abundance of diverse flora that vary from tropical rainforest plants to desert cactus. As well, there are several greenhouses where knowledgeable staff members can provide more information about any plant species that captivates your interest. Additionally, during special events and holidays, the grounds often come alive with vibrant cultures through music and traditional dance performances from around the world. Whether you are seeking a natural haven or just getting away from it all, Thurston Gardens are a must-see when visiting Fiji.
Explore the Sigatoka Sand Dunes
Located just outside of Suva, with its stunning miles of beach and towering sand dunes, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes national park is a dazzlingly beautiful place to explore. A popular tourist destination in Fiji, the park truly is a sight to behold. The sand dunes provide a unique ecosystem that tourists can take in while strolling along the coastline or while standing atop one of the many magnificent dunes. Hiking among these humongous hills gives visitors an exciting way to spend their day and also provides awesome views of Fiji’s coast from higher ground. If that wasn’t enough, the park also has historical sites for visitors to check out; discovering clear signs of ancient architecture both amongst and beneath the sands. Exploring Sigatoka Sand Dunes national park should be on everyone’s bucket list because it offers so much in terms of dynamic scenery, exciting activities, and historical ruins.
Visit the stunning & historical Albert Park
I attended a local wedding in Albert Park while in Suva, and the park was full of incredible natural beauty and history. Located near the Suva Market, it is one of the biggest public parks in Fiji, covering over five hectares of lush greenery. It features a range of traditional attributes such as bandstands and monuments alongside modern amenities including tennis courts and a gymnasium. This park is admired for its majestic teak trees, serene lake, riverside footpaths and well-manicured lawns offering visitors an ideal destination for relaxation, leisure activities or a romantic stroll. Those looking to get close to nature can take a guided tour through the Albert Park botanical gardens which provide a tranquil spot to appreciate its plants and flowers in peaceful surroundings.
Albert Park holds extreme importance to both the nation of Fiji and its citizens. In 1928, this site was chosen by aviation pioneer Sir Charles Kingsford Smith as the landing place for his achievement of the first trans-Pacific flight from the USA to Australia. Many other dignitaries have been welcomed with celebration at Albert Park, such as the Queen in 1954 and Pope John Paul II in 1986. Not only has the park served as a cornerstone for advancements in international travel, it also bears historical record of Fiji’s change of national flags, hoisting its current flag in 1970. Finally, tens of thousands of people have gathered around Albert Park for popular rugby games that interact closely with Fijian tradition. Albert Park stands firm as an integral piece of Fiji’s cultural identity due to its important milestones throughout history.
